You can watch local television online now for free if you live in New York, Chicago, Houston, Dallas or Denver.
Locast provides access to major networks such as ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC. Check your location and you can sign up for the free service, which includes a comprehensive guide to local TV channels in your city. You can look in your browser at locast.org or by downloading the free application Android .
The service qualifies itself as a "digital translator". Broadcasters use translators to repeat television signals; Locast claims to do the same thing for Internet users. Users should check their location to use Locast, which is probably the key to any legal strategy here.
Locast is run by the not-for-profit Sports Fans Coalition NYC, which advocates fan-friendly broadcast rules. There does not seem to be any revenue model, and I can not help but wonder how long it will take broadcasters to continue the service in memory. Meanwhile, residents of major US cities can watch television for free, including a number of high-profile games in the NFL.
Thanks to Luke Bouma of Cord Cutters News for reporting this service.
If you do not live in a supported city, do not worry – you can create your own full version with a DVR. Just set up the Plex DVR service and can watch live TV from anywhere.
